Abstract
This paper proposes a phase assignment algorithm "Silent Wave Algorithm (SW A)" for real-time MPEG traffic in ATM networks. Our algorithm decides when a new MPEG source should begin to transmit based on its notification parame ters and traffic measurement of ongoing connections. Simulation results sho w that it is hard to accommodate MPEG traffic effectively without any contr ol of phase assignment. On the other hand, the SWA can provide better QOS a nd improve the network utilization.
