We investigate the surface of the active layer of a recordable optical disc
with a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM). The measurements are
performed in internal reflection geometry using the depolarized signals at
room temperature. We demonstrate the imaging of the recording marks writte
n in the pre-groove and observe the internal structure within individual re
cording marks.
