Abstract
We discuss the possibility of intermediate gauge coupling unification in un ified models of string origin. Useful relations of the beta-function coeffi cients are derived, which ensure unification of couplings when Kaluza-Klein excitations are included above the compactification scale. We apply this p rocedure to two models with SU(3)X SU(3)(L) X SU(3), and SU(4)x O(4) gauge symmetries. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved .
