This paper presents a review of research papers dealing with the production
of blended fly ash cements published since the 1980s. The effects of grind
ing fly ashes on their physical and chemical properties, and their effect o
n the properties of mortars anc concretes incorporating the blended fly ash
cements, are discussed.
The production of blended fly ash cements produced by grinding portland cem
ent clinker and fly ash together versus separate grinding of the materials
followed by blending is described. The combined grinding of the portland ce
ment clinker, fly ash, gypsum, and a superplasticizer to produce a blended
cement is discussed, and reference is made to the optimum grinding processe
s and the production of high-volume fly ash blended cements. The paper conc
ludes with a list of recommendations for needed research.
