The author proposes a conceptual framework for examining the development an
d functions of occupational social work in America. The framework includes
three categories of characteristics: Societal aspects (e.g., labor-manageme
nt relations), academic-professional development (e.g., research and traini
ng), and workplace identifying professional and organizational areas that m
ay be addressed in the attempt to promote occupational social work as an ac
ademic specialization and field of social work practice.
