Samples of akaganeite (beta-FeOOH) and goethite (alpha-FeOOH) have bee
n studied after heating at various temperatures up to 800 degrees C, X
-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements showed that s
lightly below the temperatures at which the samples transform to hemat
ite (alpha-Fe2O3) the oxyhydroxide phases become nanocrystalline.
