Abstract
We have previously found that alcohol extract of Crocus sativus L. (CSE), c ommonly known as saffron, prevents ethanol-induced inhibition of hippocampa l long-term potentiation (LTP). In the present study, CSE (250 mg/kg, p.o.) was also effective in pl eventing acetaldehyde-induced inhibition of LTP i n the dentate gyrus of anesthetized rats. These results suggest that CSE ca n prevent aversive effects induced by ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehy de. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
