K. Abe et al., Saffron extract prevents acetaldehyde-induced inhibition of long-term potentiation in the rat dentate gyrus in vivo, BRAIN RES, 851(1-2), 1999, pp. 287-289
We have previously found that alcohol extract of Crocus sativus L. (CSE), c
ommonly known as saffron, prevents ethanol-induced inhibition of hippocampa
l long-term potentiation (LTP). In the present study, CSE (250 mg/kg, p.o.)
was also effective in pl eventing acetaldehyde-induced inhibition of LTP i
n the dentate gyrus of anesthetized rats. These results suggest that CSE ca
n prevent aversive effects induced by ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehy
