A dynamic method for estimating dust sink and source in buildings is descri
bed in this paper. The method is based on a mass balance equation and a non
linear parameter estimation technique. The inputs to the method are dust co
ncentrations versus time. The outputs are the estimates of dust sink and so
urce. The method converts measurement of dust sink and source to measuremen
ts of dust concentration versus time. Published data and experimental measu
rements were used to validate this method. The errors generated by the meth
od are less than 2% for production rates and 7% for deposition rates. The m
ethod is not sensitive to different parameter estimation methods and initia
