Chemical ionization of n-paraffins (CnH2n+2:n=14 similar to 18) by the CH5, C2H5+, and C3H5+ ions has been studied using an ion-trap type of GC/MS un
der a reactant-ion-selected mode. In all the reactions, CnH2n+1+ and CmH2m1+ (m=3 similar to n-3) ions were observed. The most favorable fragment CmH
2m+1+ ion in the CH5+ reaction was m = 8, while that in the C2H5+ and C3H5 reactions was m = n-5 or n-6.
