Magnetic resonance pancreatography (MRP) is a technique that permits accura
te evaluation of the pancreatic duct without instrumentation, contrast mate
rial administration, or ionizing radiation. Because MRP is entirely noninva
sive, MRP avoids complications associated with endoscopic retrograde pancre
atography (ERP) such as pancreatitis and perforation. MRP allows for the no
ninvasive evaluation of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis, varia
nt anatomy of the pancreatic duct, pancreatic duct trauma, and pancreatic n
eoplasia. MRP yields diagnostic information in the setting of a failed or i
ncomplete ERP. When MRP is performed in conjunction with conventional abdom
inal MR, the result is a comprehensive examination of the pancreatic duct a
s well as the pancreas and other solid organs of the abdomen.
