The theory of strings: An introduction

In this article the basic notions, successes and limitations of the Standar d Model of elementary particle physics are introduced. This is followed by a discussion of several speculative ideas which over the years attempted to remedy these limitations. Finally, the basic concepts of string theory are described in the light of this discussion.
