A social accounting matrix (SAM) having 60 production sectors, two factors
of production, namely, labour and capital and 12 household occupational cat
egories has been constructed for the Indian economy for 1994-95. For constr
uction of SAM the 1989-90 Input-Output table prepared by the Central Statis
tical Organisation has been updated The distribution of personal income amo
ng different household categories, which is a unique feature of this SAM fo
r India, is based on the 'Income and Expenditure Survey of Households' cond
ucted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research for the year 199
4-95 as part of the MIMAP-India project. The problems encountered and the m
ethodology used for constructing the SAM have been highlighted.
