Copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene was investigated in tr
ichlorotrifluoroethane and trichlorofluoromethane solvents. The high solubi
lity of the monomers in these solvents made polymerization under reduced pr
essures possible. Trichlorofluoromethane acted as an effective chain transf
er agent to regulate the molecular weight. Kinetic studies showed that bimo
lecular and unimolecular termination prevailed at low and high polymer conc
entrations, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserve
