Common midpoint (CMP) stacking and velocity analysis are fundamental seismi
c imaging concepts based on a layered velocity model. We relate these conce
pts to partial derivative seismograms, which give seismic amplitude variati
ons as a function of layer coordinates. The CMP stacking hyperbola can be d
escribed kinematically by partial derivative seismograms, resulting in an i
nteresting seismic imaging relationship.
