This paper presents a blushless permanent-magnet (PM) DC motor for use as t
he spindle motor in Compact-Disk Read-Only-Memory (CD-ROM) drive. The propo
sed motor is a slotted stator and an outer-rotor which uses a high energy m
agnet, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) for excitation. The design and optimiza
tion of the motor was done with the aid of electromagnetic field analysis b
ased on the finite element method. Computational and experimental results o
f the motor are included.
