In order to compare the effect of three selection methods. forty-eight sorg
hum varieties and inbreds were planted in duplicated trials, one of which w
as irrigated. The effect of relative drought on grain yield, ears per plot,
seeds per ear, thousand-seed mass, biomass, seeds per plot and harvest ind
ex were determined. Seven genotypes from each of the varieties and inbreds
were selected by three different methods. The resultant changes in the mean
s of each characteristic of the genotypes indicated that in order to increa
se a cultivars' drought resistance, yield potential may have to be sacrific
ed. Therefore, yield potential needs to be included in the formation of a s
election index for drought resistance. This selection index could include e
ither the maintenance under increasing moisture stress of harvest index or
grain yield.
