Abstract
In the presented paper development, prevalence, and pathogenicity of Giardi a in dogs and the zoonotic potential of Giardia are described and discussed . Efficacy studies, which demonstrate the suitability of fenbendazole to co ntrol infections with Giardia in dogs are reviewed. At a dose rate of 50 mg /kg BW/day for 3 days Giardia trophozoits are eliminated from the intestina l tract and faecal cyst shedding is reduced. On the basis of these efficacy studies fenbendazole was approved for the treatment of Giardia in dogs in Germany.
