In the presented paper development, prevalence, and pathogenicity of Giardi
a in dogs and the zoonotic potential of Giardia are described and discussed
. Efficacy studies, which demonstrate the suitability of fenbendazole to co
ntrol infections with Giardia in dogs are reviewed. At a dose rate of 50 mg
/kg BW/day for 3 days Giardia trophozoits are eliminated from the intestina
l tract and faecal cyst shedding is reduced. On the basis of these efficacy
studies fenbendazole was approved for the treatment of Giardia in dogs in
Germany.
