Abstract
The rare case of an unexpected complication of anaesthesia due to a cuff he rnia is described. The wear-out of the inflatable cuff can provoke herniati on on the weakest point of the cuff. This cuffhernia can either be extended to the tube opening and leads to its closure or press this tube opening ag ainst the tracheal wall. Main symptoms are forced respiration or ventilatio n, which may cause hypoventilation respectively apnea and even death.
