W. Beck, Case report: Infection by Campanulotes bidentatus compar (Mallophaga : Goniodidae) in a pigeon (Columba livia domestica), KLEINTIER P, 44(12), 1999, pp. 943
Mallophagidosis in birds is a relatively common disease. The stenoxene exte
rnal parasites show a large variability in species and sizes. They feed epi
dermal scales, skin secretions and feather peaces. A flight unable pigeon w
as found and presented for treatment. Clinical examination and microscopy o
f impression smear of skin and feathers revealed a massive mallophagidosis
by Campanulotes bidentatus compar (NITZSCH und BURMEISTER, 1838). By whole
body spraying with fipronil the parasites were eliminated. Columbicola colu
mbae is the most known pigeon louse. Other species should be considered as
a differential diagnosis.
