Depending on the martensitic transformation temperatures and mechanical pro
perties, alloys exhibiting this phenomenon can have a wide range of applica
tions. Such transformations are known to exist in the platinum system. Plat
inum-iron is reported to exhibit a martensitic transformation, for example,
from a disordered fee (face-centred cubic) to a bcc (body-centred cubic),
or from an ordered fee to a bet (body-centred tetragonal) structure. The tr
ansformation temperature is usually in the range 30 to 300 degrees C. A mar
tensite-type transformation has also been observed in platinum-titanium, wh
ere a B2 (ordered bcc) to B19 (orthorhombic) transformation occurs, with th
e transformation temperature in the region of 1000-1070 degrees C. Martensi
te transformations have been observed in other platinum systems, such as pl
atinum-gallium and platinum-aluminium. This paper describes martensitic-typ
e transformations in the platinum-titanium system. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scienc
