A model for the stress induced martensitic transformation in zirconia ceram
ics was refined and extended to investigate the process of stress induced m
artensitic transformation in an Fe-Ni-C alloy in compression. The relations
hips between the amount of martensite transformed, the volume change, and t
he longitudinal and transverse strains caused by the transformation, were p
redicted by the model and confirmed by experiment. According to the model,
under uniaxial compression the grains with orientations dose to < 100 > dir
ection will preferentially transform to martensite. A consequence of this p
referential transformation was the prediction of the development of a textu
re in the remaining austenite at low fractions of the stress induced marten
site (< 30%). The predicted texture in compression has been confirmed by X-
ray diffraction. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
