Phase transformations in metals are considered in terms of non-equilibrium
continuum thermodynamics. The evolution of a heterophase system in thermal
and electric fields is described by a self-consistent set of differential e
quations. Special attention is paid to the thermoelectric properties of pha
se boundaries. A one-dimensional model for uniform translational motion of
a plane interface is developed, the spatial distributions of temperature an
d electric charge, current and potential are calculated. (C) 1999 Elsevier
