Effect of electrical stunning on brain function in commercial rabbits was e
valuated in electrophysiological studies. In addition to measuring duration
of spontaneous physical activity and times to signs of recovery, electroco
rticogram (ECOG) recordings and evoked responses were analysed following el
ectrical stunning with 100 V for 1 s in eight rabbits. Epileptiform and oth
er types of activity indicating insensibility were observed in the ECOG. Ev
oked responses were absent from 24 to 204 s following stunning. Application
of a minimum current of 140 mA followed by prompt sticking should prevent
welfare problems at stunning and slaughter in rabbits. (C) 1999 Elsevier Sc
