The use of angioplasty and stent techniques for revascularization of the ce
rvical carotid bifurcation has been limited. Carotid endarterectomy has bee
n demonstrated to be safe and effective in two multicentered randomized tri
als. In patients who are considered at risk for excessive morbidity and mor
tality from open surgical revascularization, carotid endovascular revascula
rization provides a good alternative. This article outlines the indications
, methods, complications and perioperative management of patients treated w
ith balloon angioplasty and stent of the cervical carotid bifurcation.
