Abstract
The design and testing of a pi/mu identifier suitable for use in pion-proto n elastic scattering experiments in the momentum range 65-160 MeV/c is desc ribed. A neural network technique is used for particle identification. The apparatus (a multilayer scintillator stack) was found to have a particle id entification efficiency of better than 98%.
