Abstract
Optical alignment and strong residual birefringence in a nematic liquid cry stal that is stabilized by a polymer network are described. The polymer's m ain chain contains an azo dye, which is responsible for the repulsion of th e axis of the guest-host system from the electric field of the excitation l ight.
