The synthesis of a series of side-chain liquid crystalline siloxane co
polymers is reported, and comparative studies of physical properties o
f members of the series with different side-chain length have been att
empted. All the five members show smectic C and smectic A phases. Mea
surements of ferroelectricity, relaxation times and electroclinic prop
erties have been carried out, aiming at finding structure-property rel
ationships for the longer side-chain members. A relationship between e
lectroclinic coefficient and side-chain length was also found. (C) 199
