A series of substituted phenylene-thienyl based conducting polymers have be
en synthesized where fluorine and alkoxy functionalities have been systemat
ically incorporated into the phenylene moiety. The structures of the monome
rs and the polymers were confirmed by spectroscopy. Thin films were obtaine
d by chemical and electrochemical deposition. The polymers demonstrated a w
ide variation of solubility, optical absorption, electrical conductivity, a
nd electrochemical properties. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights re
