The magnetic anisotropy of Ni/Cr multilayers has been investigated by
using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and ferromagnetic resonance
techniques (FMR). The FMR spectra are obtained as a function of the or
ientation of the applied magnetic field from in-plane to out-of-plane.
The results are fitted theoretically to determine the magnetic anisot
ropy. From VSM and FMR, a positive value for Ni/Cr interface anisotrop
y is obtained, which favours a perpendicular easy axis. The possible m
echanism for the perpendicular anisotropy has been discussed and it ma
y be attributed to the magnetostriction, caused by intrinsic stress du
e to lattice mismatch.
