In the present study, simple grinding experiments are carried out which sug
gest that the fragmented zone can give rise to metal removal in the form of
thin delaminated wear platelets. These an evident when grinding in an iner
t atmosphere and take the form of oxide spheres (sparks) when grinding in a
ir. In this study well formed burrs were observed in 'interrupted cut' grin
ding whereas in more continuous grinding, redeposition is suggested to be a
contributor to burr formation resulting in a partial breakdown of the burr
