Graft copolymers of vinylacetate on secondary cellulosic fiber were prepare
d by the use of iron(II)-hydrogen peroxide redox system as initiator, in aq
ueous medium. The graft copolymers were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy
, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis.
The following parameters of the copolymerization reaction were studied: cel
lulose: vinylacetate reagents ratio, concentration Fe+2-H2O2, pH, temperatu
re and time of reaction. Their effects on the system are also discussed. Th
e grafting percent higher than 100% were obtained in the best condition of
reation, with a heterogeneous distribution of synthetic polymer over the fi
ber surface.
