Abstract
Transmission photoelasticity is a well established procedure For solid bodi es; to the authors' knowledge there is no corresponding technique for parti culate media, especially granular soil media. This paper presents such a pr ocedure using the crosshole seismic probing common to geophysical imaging. We establish a relationship between stresses and travel times, and then pre sent strategies for inverting the borehole-to-borehole travel times to yiel d the stress held.
