In the May/June 1997 issue of the Journal of Counseling & Development, Euge
ne Kelly contended that the counseling profession should integrate its theo
ries to combine the strengths of both the humanistic and the technical orie
ntations in the field. Kelly's recommendation is supported by previous effo
rts that have already advanced the field. Human Technology (HT) as devised
by Robert Carkhuff integrated nondirective, psychodynamic, and behavioristi
c counseling modes. Extensions of HT also demonstrate the continuing growth
potential in the integrative strategy. In this article, the authors discus
s those endeavors to emphasize the potential contributions to be attained b
y integrating humanistic and technical orientations.
