S. Goldberg, J. E. Grusec, and J. M. Jenkins (1999) argued that an evolutio
nary model restricted to the protective function of parent-infant relations
hips provides a distinctive focus for attachment theory. An alternative mod
el that assumes that the evolutionary advantage of the attachment system is
based on the imperative that parents and infants develop a stable relation
ship may be more consistent with modem, evolutionary theory as well sis cur
rent advances in attachment research.
