Abstract
The inner detectors of LHC experiments will contain pixel detectors coverin g an area of several square meters. In addition they are facing the harsh r adiation environment of the LHC. A first prototype sensor has been designed according to the requirements of the ATLAS experiment, produced and succes sfully tested with static measurements. Irradiation tests have also been pe rformed with excellent results. The sensor is an n(+)n-device in order to a llow partial depleted operation after bulk inversion and a guard ring schem e keeping the entire detector surface close to the electronic chip on groun d potential. Further, a bias structure is introduced providing testability of the sensors prior to bump bonding and flip chipping. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
