The insufficient side branches of the long saphenous vein of a 59 years old
woman were treated with descending sclerotherapy (Tournay method) with jod
ide containing agents. In the following days a fistulating inflammation dev
eloped at the side of injection on the upper leg. This fistulation persiste
d over several weeks and was finally excised in tote. Histology exhibited a
foreign body reaction with mucine deposits. This case shows, that although
a necrosis after sclerotherapy leads in most cases to an atrophic scar, a
fistulating inflammation may also develop.
