Differently prepared surfaces of quasicrystalline i-Al-Pd-Mn are analyzed u
sing angle-resolved photoemission in the x-ray and ultraviolet range of pho
ton energies. Depending on the preparation, we find both surfaces with crys
talline structure and metallic character, and surfaces with quasicrystallin
e structural fingerprints and a suppressed density of states at the Fermi l
evel, compatible with a pseudogap. [S0163-1829(99)51048-5].
