Abstract
Surface Brillouin scattering (SBS) has been used to examine the elastic pro perties of a supported gold film at high pressure. The velocities of the ac oustic modes of a 99 nm thick film have been measured to a pressure of 4.8 GPa, by means of a gem anvil cell with cubic zirconia anvils. A large stiff ening of the film has been detected, most clearly revealed by an increase i n the value of the c(44) elastic constant. The work demonstrates the potent ial of the SBS technique in high-pressure studies of the elastic properties of opaque materials. [S0163-1829(99)51246-0].
