A new acetogenin, trivial name goniothalamusin, has been isolated from the
aerial parts of Goniothalamus gardneri (Annonaceae). Goniothalamusin is a l
inear acetylenic and olefinic acetogenin with a C25 skeleton, lacking oxyge
nated substituents on its alkyl chain and with a new type of saturated gamm
a-hydroxymethyl-gamma-lactone terminal ring. Its structure and relative ste
reochemistry established as rel-24 alpha-hydroxymethyl-2 beta-eicosa-21-en-
13-yn-tetrahydrofuran-1-one has been elucidated by spectroscopic analysis.
