Abstract
Jatropham, (R)-(-)-5-hydroxy-3-methyl-3-pyrrolin-2-one, is synthesized in t hree steps from citraconic anhydride. Highly regioselective reduction of ci traconimide gives racemic jatropham in high yield. Kinetic resolution of ra cemic jatropham using lipase is also described. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science L td.
