The crystal structure of beta-Al2Te3 has been determined by means of s
ingle crystal x-ray diffractometry. The examined crystal can be descri
bed as a pseudomerohedric twin with a plane of reflection in (001) as
twin element. The refinement in P2(1)/c (No.14) with the crystal param
eters a=7.181(1) Angstrom, b=12.848(3) Angstrom c=14.167(3) Angstrom,
beta=90.04(2)degrees, V=1307.1 Angstrom(3) and Z=8 resulted in a final
R-value (based on Fl of 0.0245. beta-Al2Te3 crystallizes in a layered
arrangement and represents a new structure type.
