Tuberculosis is well entrenched in the world and the number of cases is pro
jected to continue to rise, especially in low-income countries. Eradication
of the disease will be difficult in poor countries where, for the most par
t, the population is increasing. HIV infection is spreading, and control me
asures are inadequate or lacking. The problem is worsened by the increasing
prevalence in many countries of strains of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tu
berculosis.
