Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from bare roughened Fe electrodes
was observed by confocal Raman microscopy for the first time. The combinati
on of SERS and STM measurements indicates that a proper surface-roughening
procedure is indispensable for obtaining good-quality surface Raman spectra
from bare bulk Fe electrodes. The surface-enhancement factors for various
roughened Fe surfaces were calculated to range from two to three orders, cr
itically depending on the roughening procedure. The lightning rod effect ma
y mainly contribute the surface-enhancement on the Fe surfaces. (C) 2000 El
