Abstract
The ability of rife (Oryza sativa L.) to regenerate plantlets from cal li differs among different cultivars. The present experiments were imp lemented to examine genetic characteristics of plant regeneration from calli in different rice cultivars. The rate of plant regeneration fro m mature seed-derived calli was higher in Tadukan (indica) than in Nor in 1 (japonica). The inheritance mode of plant regeneration ability wa s analyzed in populations of the F-2 generation from Norin 1 x Tadukan and in those of the back-crossed generation (F1BC1) from Norin 1 x F- 1 plants (Norin 1 x Tadukan). A Chi-square test in the F-2 generation showed a 3 (dominant):1 (recessive) segregation ratio for the higher a nd the lower plant regeneration abilities, respectively. A Chi-square test in the F1BC1 generation showed a 1 (dominant):1 (recessive) segre gation ratio for the higher and the lower plant regeneration abilities , respectively. Thus, the higher plant regeneration characteristics of Tadukan appear to be regulated by a single dominant gene.
