Pulsed laser operation of a new high Cr4+ concentration forsterite cry
stal is reported. Slope efficiencies of 13% and 5% have been obtained
for 1064 and 532 nm pumping. Results are compared with the performance
of three other forsterite crystals. A threefold enhancement in operat
ing efficiency is obtained over standard low dopant-level material. Tu
ning ranges have also been investigated.
