Abstract
The reaction of 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid with one or two equiv of a benz yl chloride in the presence of one equiv of NaBH4 in DMF furnishes selectiv ely the respective 5-benzyl or 5,5-dibenzyl derivative in high yield.
