The difficulties associated with the correct approximation of the pressure
in numerical simulations of directional solidification are examined. The su
itability of methods available to calculate pressure in the presence of a m
ushy zone where how induced by density differences due to change of phase,
or 'shrink age', occurs is discussed, and a viable method of calculation ba
sed on the penalty function formulation is proposed. Results of calculation
s for flows under reduced and normal gravity environments are presented. Co
