Bioassay/RIA-directed HPLC purification of a MeOH extract of the seeds
of Xerophyllum tenax yielded 20-hydroxyecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdyson
e 2-beta-D-glucopyranoside. the latter being a novel natural product.
The structures were elucidated primarily on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR
spectroscopic evidence. The ecdysteroid agonist activity of these iso
lates was determined on the B-11 tumorous blood cell line of Drosophil
a melanogaster. ED50 values for 20-hydroxyecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdys
one 2-beta-D-glucopyranoside were found to be 8.0x10(-9) M and 1.3x10(
-4) M, respectively. The significance of the presence of ecdysteroid c
onjugates in plants is discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
