An energy dependent phase-shift analysis of p + d elastic scattering below
the deuteron breakup threshold has been conducted. The analysis indicates t
he existence of a singularity in the doubler S-wave effective range functio
n, resulting in a very small value for the scattering length (2)a(pd). The
inferred value of the quarter S-wave scattering length (4)a(pd) is in good
