In the present investigation, flake graphite cast iron fracture toughness w
ith different matrixes and eutectic cell sizes is studied. Properties of te
nsile strength, hardness and impact toughness are also studied. The experim
ental data are compared to the same determined parameters in silicon steel
with a chemical composition similar to that of the cast iron etallic matrix
. A subsequent study of the crack surfaces enables us to establish fracture
mechanisms. The joint analysis of the mechanical results and of the fracto
graphic studies allows to establish the influence of graphite on the differ
ent mechanical properties of cast iron and on fracture micromechanisms as w
ell. Models of fracture mechanics which evaluate tensile strength and fract
ure toughness are examined making contributions that may improve such model
s.
